In Australia, bronze works well for outdoor sculpture because it is corrosion-resistant and weather-resistant. Larger sculptures can be supported by bronze because it is a very robust material as well. The lovely golden hue of bronze statues won’t deteriorate with time. A patina, which is forced oxidisation produced by carefully regulated chemical and thermal processes, can be applied to bronze sculptures as well. This considerably reduces maintenance requirements while also enhancing the sculpture’s longevity. Many monumental works throughout history have been created using this medium.

A type of steel called corten steel develops a protective surface of rust naturally over time. The beauty of stainless steel is that it does not rust and strongly resists degradation.
