Corten steel is one of the most popular materials in contemporary Australian outdoor sculpture — a weathering steel that develops a stable, rust-coloured oxide layer within its first year or two of exposure, protecting the metal beneath rather than continuing to corrode. That warm, earthy patina reads as distinctly Australian against native gardens and bushland settings, and needs no maintenance to achieve or preserve it.
ARTpark’s corten-steel collection spans intimate garden pieces through to monumental landmark installations, in forms ranging from geometric and totemic to figurative and abstract. Corten is also one of the most cost-effective ways to achieve large-scale outdoor sculpture, since the material itself is relatively affordable and requires no applied finish.
Beyond its visual character, corten steel is prized for its durability — it stands up to everything the Australian climate can throw at it, from coastal salt air to intense UV, making it a genuinely low-maintenance choice for public and private outdoor spaces alike.

Why Choose Corten Steel Sculpture?
Weathering steel, commonly called corten, was developed in the 1930s for railway wagons and is now a favourite of architects, landscape designers and sculptors. Its alloy forms a dense rust layer that seals the surface, so unlike ordinary steel it does not keep corroding and flaking.
A new corten sculpture may arrive grey or bright orange. It settles into a stable rich brown over several months to a couple of years depending on sun and rain, and then needs no paint, sealant or maintenance.
Consultations and Commissions

Corten Steel Sculpture FAQs
How much does a corten steel sculpture cost?
Price depends on size, complexity, edition and whether the piece is commissioned. Corten is generally the most affordable of the long-lasting sculpture metals, which makes it ideal for large outdoor works.
Will a corten sculpture stain my paving?
While the surface is still weathering, rainwater can carry rust onto pale stone, concrete or pavers. Place corten on gravel, garden beds or a dark plinth, or allow a drip zone. Run-off drops greatly once the patina stabilises.
Is corten steel suitable near the coast?
Corten performs best where it can dry out between wet spells. On sites exposed to constant salt spray, we usually recommend bronze or 316-grade stainless steel instead.
Can corten steel sculpture be used indoors?
Yes. For indoor display the surface is pre-weathered and sealed so rust does not rub off, and a plinth protects floors.
Do you do home consultations?
Yes, within the Sydney region. Elsewhere we offer online consultations with photo mock-ups of the sculpture in your space.
How is my sculpture delivered?
We use specialist freight Australia-wide and can install on site. Cost depends on weight, location and access. Email sculpture@artpark.com.au or call 1800 646 131 for a quote.
Corten Steel Sculptures for Sale in Australia
Corten (weathering) steel forms a stable, rusted surface that protects the metal beneath, giving a warm, earthy finish that deepens over time and never needs painting. That makes corten steel sculpture one of the most popular choices for outdoor and garden art in Australia. Every corten sculpture in our collection is an original or a limited edition by an Australian artist.
