Recommended Materials for Outdoor Sculptures in Sydney

Outdoor sculptures can be made from a variety of materials, each with its own unique properties and characteristics.the preffered materials used for outdoor sculptures in Sydney hardwearing metals; Corten Steel, Stainless-steel  & bronze with protective patination – The choice of material used in creating an outdoor sculpture will depend on the artist’s vision, the intended location and environment, and the desired effect.

Bronze Sculpture Sydney

Bronze is one of the most dependable materials for outdoor sculpture and garden statues in Australian conditions. It resists corrosion, copes with heat, salt air and heavy rain, and is strong enough for large and complex forms. Left untreated, bronze slowly darkens, so most sculptors apply a controlled patina (browns, blacks, greens or blues) sealed with wax. A light re-wax once or twice a year is usually all the care it needs, and a well-cast bronze will outlast the garden it stands in. Steel Outdoor Sculpture – Sydney

Mild steel is strong, cost-effective and easy for sculptors to cut, bend and weld, which makes it a practical choice for bold outdoor metal sculpture at a more accessible price. Unlike corten or stainless steel, mild steel will rust if left bare, so outdoor pieces are finished with powder coating, quality exterior paint or galvanising. Powder coating also opens up almost any colour. With a good finish and the occasional touch-up, a mild steel garden sculpture stays vibrant for many years. See powder-coated sculpture, or for coastal sites ask us about galvanised or stainless steel alternatives.

Corten Steel Sculpture – Sydney

Corten steel develops a protective layer of rust that then stabilises and stops corroding, which makes it an ideal material for outdoor sculpture in Australian conditions. It is strong enough to be shaped into large and heavy pieces, needs no painting or special treatment, and asks almost nothing in the way of maintenance. Its deep rust colour sits particularly well against native planting and dry landscapes. Browse ARTpark's corten steel sculpture collection, or see metal garden sculpture.

Stainless-Steel Sculpture – Sydney

Stainless steel is a mainstay of contemporary garden sculpture, public art and outdoor features across Australia, because it can be cast, fabricated and machined into almost any form and finished in a range of surface treatments and colour effects. Its key advantages are resistance to rust and degradation, and the availability of different grades. 304-grade stainless is commonly used for general art features, while 316-grade is recommended for coastal sites and gardens for its greater resistance to corrosion. Australian Artists

ARTpark is proud to showcase a talented and diverse group of artists from Australia and beyond. Our artists work across a range of mediums and styles, from traditional bronze sculptures to contemporary metal works and mixed media installations. Whether they are established names or emerging talents, our artists share a commitment to innovation, quality, and craftsmanship. They draw inspiration from a variety of sources, from the natural world to urban landscapes and abstract concepts, resulting in a vibrant and captivating collection of outdoor sculptures in Sydney. At ARTpark, we believe that art has the power to transform and enrich our lives, and we are honoured to represent these talented artists and their inspiring works.

Greg Johns

Greg Johns is one of Australia’s best known and most successful contemporary sculptors. Based in Adelaide, he has been making sculptures for public spaces since graduating from the S.A.N School of Art in 1978. He is a member of the New York Sculptors’ Guild and the International Sculptor Centre and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, England and the United States.

Johns’ work is deeply influenced by the big sky country of the Adelaide Hills, characterised by its simultaneous toughness and vulnerability. However, over time, a layering of ideas has evolved within Johns’ aesthetic, which could be said to tie his work more tightly with the object matters of Melbourne based artists, rather than the Conceptual non-makers of Adelaide. Despite placing importance on the local context of his practice, recognition and acceptance of his sculpture has come largely, from outside of his hometown. In 2005 Johns was selected as a finalist in the Helen Lempriere Sculpture Prize, and he has received numerous public and private sculpture commissions.

Larissa Smagarinsky

Smagarinsky’s work is influenced by classical sculpture, but she also incorporates modern elements to create a unique style. Her figurative sculptures are known for their lifelike details, intricate textures, and dynamic poses. She uses the lost wax casting process to create her bronze sculptures, which allows her to capture the essence of movement and emotion in her work.

Smagarinsky’s sculptures have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Florence Biennale in Italy. She has also received numerous awards and commissions, including a commission to create a bronze sculpture for the city of Moscow.

Smagarinsky’s passion for sculpture is evident in her dedication to her craft. She continues to push the boundaries of figurative sculpture and explores new techniques to create her stunning bronze masterpieces. Her work is highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts, and she is considered one of the most talented and accomplished figurative sculptors working today.

Stephen Glassborow

born in Hammersmith, England and studied sculpture at the Brighton College of Art, before becoming a permanent resident of Australia in 1983. He is now one of Australia’s most successful and important artists, where public sculptures can be found in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and regional Victoria. Glassborow specialises in bronze and draws inspiration from Greco-Roman ruins, art deco forms as well as contemporary abstracts to present human figures in a unique style. In each sculpture, his intention is to capture the figure in a merging of real and abstract, inspired by a pose, an idea a phrase or a context.

His work sells internationally, in many different countries, and he exhibits regularly in both the United States and the UK as well as all over Australia. Public works by Glassborow can also be found internationally, in cities such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpar, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul.

James Parrett (2018 sculpture by the sea winner)

Parrett’s work explores the relationship between humanity and the natural environment, often using discarded industrial materials to create his sculptures. He has exhibited in various galleries and art fairs in Australia and internationally, including the Sydney Contemporary Art Fair and Art Central Hong Kong. Parrett’s sculptures are held in private and public collections in Australia, including the National Gallery of Victoria. James Parrett has been sculpting for over 25 years now. He has been a finalist in numerous sculpture prizes, created several solo exhibitions and awarded a number of commissions, most notably The Rabaul and Montevideo Maru memorial at the Australian War Memorial (Canberra 2012). James is winner of the Montalto Winery sculpture prize in 2016 and recipient of the 2018 Aqualand sculpture prize, the major award at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi.

Phillip Piperides

Phillip Piperidis is an internationally renowned artist and sculptor born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1956. He migrated to Australia in 1967 and discovered his passion for sculpture as a teenager, studying under the tutelage of Russian-born sculptor George Virine from 1972 to 1976. Piperidis later travelled to Greece, where he trained under the legendary Greek sculptor Vangilis Moustakas and acquired extensive knowledge of bronze casting at the Dimitri Gavallas Foundry. He was awarded the Churchill Fellowship (Sculpture) in 1990 and travelled to Canada, the USA, and England to further his knowledge of monumental castings. Today, Piperidis is an internationally acclaimed artist and sculptor at the height of his career, continuously pushing the boundaries of the art world.

Garden Sculptures and Statues in Sydney

ARTpark is a Sydney-based sculpture gallery supplying garden sculptures, garden statues and outdoor sculpture to homes, gardens and projects across Sydney and NSW. We represent leading Australian and New Zealand artists working in bronze, corten steel and stainless steel, and every piece is an original or a limited edition.

Sydney Site Visits

Within the Sydney region we visit your home or site to assess space, sightlines and access, recommend works to suit, and prepare photo mock-ups so you can see the sculpture in place before you buy. We work across Greater Sydney, from the Eastern Suburbs, North Shore and Northern Beaches to the Hills District, Inner West, Sutherland Shire and Southern Highlands.

Delivery and Installation in Sydney

We deliver and install outdoor sculpture throughout Sydney, including crane lifts for large works, concrete footings, fixings and stone plinths. Steep blocks, narrow side access and apartment terraces are common in Sydney, and we plan for them from the start.

The Right Sculpture for Sydney Gardens

Salt air affects many Sydney gardens. For harbourside, Eastern Suburbs and Northern Beaches properties, choose bronze garden statues or 316-grade outdoor stainless steel sculpture. Further inland, corten steel sculpture weathers beautifully against sandstone and native planting. See our full range of garden sculptures and metal garden sculpture.

Across NSW and Canberra

Beyond Sydney, we deliver and install throughout regional NSW, including the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the South Coast, as well as Canberra and the ACT. Our placements include the Kiama Sculpture Walk and the Shellharbour Marina Sculpture Walk on the NSW South Coast.

Commissions for Sydney Homes and Projects

Many of our artists accept commissions at a different scale or finish, or for a fully bespoke work. We regularly work with Sydney landscape designers, architects and developers. Contact us or call 1800 646 131 to book a visit.
