A garden sculpture has to do two things at once: hold its own as a work of art, and survive outdoors in Australian conditions for decades. ARTpark represents practising Australian sculptors whose work is built for exactly that — full sun, coastal salt, frost, and the odd hailstorm.

This collection holds every ARTpark work suited to a garden setting, from tabletop bronzes for a courtyard through to landmark pieces sited across a paddock.

Choosing a material

Material is usually the first real decision, and each behaves differently outdoors:

• Corten steel weathers to a stable rust-orange skin that then stops corroding. It suits native and dry planting particularly well, and needs no maintenance at all. Expect some run-off staining onto pale paving in the first year.
• Stainless steel stays bright and handles coastal salt better than anything else. A mirror polish reflects sky and planting, changing through the day; a brushed finish reads as solid form.
• Cast bronze develops a patina over decades rather than degrading, and carries fine detail. An occasional wax is the only upkeep.
• Fabricated and powder-coated steel allow large built forms and strong permanent colour, useful where a work needs to read against dense green.

Getting the scale right

Scale is where most garden sculpture goes wrong. Against mature gums or established hedging, a piece under a metre tends to disappear; the same work reads perfectly in a courtyard or beside a pool. As a rough guide, a sculpture should be viewed from around three times its height, so decide where it will be seen from before you settle on size.

Siting, delivery and installation

Smaller works sit on a paver, a plinth or directly on ground. Anything above roughly 1.5 metres generally wants a concrete footing, and larger pieces need engineered footings and certified installation — along with access for a hiab or crane. It is worth confirming access early; a narrow side gate rules out a surprising number of works.

Commissions

Every sculptor represented here takes commissions. An existing work can often be made at a different height, in a different material, or with an alternative patina or colour to suit a specific garden — frequently a better outcome than compromising on a piece that nearly fits.
