Ironically titled The Excavator, this work reads first as a bird. Its elongated beak rests in direct contact with the floor, an almost archaeological gesture that suggests digging, searching or uncovering. The title names a machine built to cut into and rearrange the ground, and Johns gives that same action to an animal, so the industrial reference and the natural form share one body.
The piece is typical of Johns’ exploration of natural forms and of what abstraction can do. It is simple, yet it carries a real sense of movement, and what could have been a plain silhouette becomes a thoughtful, meditative work. Made in Corten steel, it weathers outdoors to a deep rust patina and keeps changing in the landscape where it stands.

Johns’ work is deeply influenced by the big sky country of the Adelaide Hills, characterized by its simultaneous toughness and vulnerability. However, over time, a layering of ideas has evolved within Johns’ aesthetic, which could be said to tie his work more tightly with the object matters of Melbourne based artists, rather than the Conceptual non-makers of Adelaide. Despite placing importance on the local context of his practice, recognition and acceptance of his sculpture has come largely, from outside of his hometown. In 2005 Johns was selected as a finalist in the Helen Lempriere Sculpture Prize, and he has received numerous public and private sculpture commissions.
