The right base changes how a sculpture is seen

A plinth sets the height a work is read at, gives it presence in the room or garden and separates it from the floor, lawn or paving around it. Get the proportion and material right and the base disappears into the work. Get it wrong and the sculpture looks either stranded or crowded.

We design and fabricate plinths for works from our represented sculptors and for sculpture bought elsewhere. Send us a photograph, the dimensions and weight of the piece and where it is going, and we will recommend a material, a height and a fixing method.

Outdoors, the base is only half the job. We organise footings and engineering services, coordinate with your builder or landscaper and install the work on site, so the plinth, the footing and the sculpture arrive as one finished piece.

Plinth materials

  • Stone

Granite, marble, limestone and honed composite. Heavy and stable, suited to outdoor and high-traffic sites, in finishes from polished to flamed.

  • Steel

Powder-coated, raw or Corten steel for a clean contemporary line. Can be made hollow for ballast, cabling or concealed fixings.

  • Timber

Finished to match existing joinery or decking, for interiors and covered outdoor spaces.

  • Acrylic

Clear or frosted acrylic almost disappears, which suits smaller works where the base should not compete.

  • Concrete & composite

Cast or rendered bases for gardens and public sites, finished to suit paving and landscape materials.

  • Made to order

Every plinth is made for the work it carries. Sizes, finishes and edge details are set from the sculpture, not a catalogue.

Getting the proportion right

Height is set by how the work is meant to be read. A figurative bronze usually wants its focal point near eye level for a standing viewer. An abstract form often reads better lower, where its silhouette sits against the garden or the room. For outdoor pieces we also look at the sightline from the house, the terrace and the street.

Footprint matters as much as height. A base in balance with the work gives the sculpture its full scale and a sense of poise; one that is too wide or too slight works against it. We mock up options from your site photos before anything is made.

Outdoor plinths and footings

Outdoor bases need drainage, a footing suited to the ground conditions and materials that will not stain or spall through Australian summers and coastal salt air. We specify for the site, whether the work sits on lawn, paving, a slab, a rooftop or a pool surround.

We organise footings and engineering services for you, including engineered footing design and sign-off where a site requires it, and coordinate the work with landscapers and builders so the base is set into paving or garden beds as part of the build.

Commercial and public sites

For lobbies, forecourts, public walks and hospitality venues, plinths can be designed to meet OH&S and anti-tamper requirements, with concealed fixings, weighted or bolted bases and edge treatments that suit a public thoroughfare.

Where structural certification is required we work with qualified engineers to obtain it, and supply dimensions, weights and fixing details for your project documentation.

Questions

Do you make plinths for sculpture bought elsewhere?

Yes. Send photographs, the dimensions and weight of the work, and tell us where it is going. We will recommend a material, height and fixing method.

How do you decide the height of a plinth?

From the work and the setting. We look at where the focal point of the sculpture sits, whether it will be seen seated or standing, and what is behind it. Outdoors we also consider sightlines from the house and street.

Do you organise footings and engineers?

Yes. We organise footings and engineering services, including engineered footing design and sign-off where a site requires it, and coordinate with your builder or landscaper.

Will an outdoor plinth stain or crack?

Not if the material and footing are specified for the site. Coastal salt, drainage and ground movement all factor in, which is why we ask about the location before recommending a material.

Can a plinth be made anti-tamper for a public site?

Yes. Concealed fixings, weighted or bolted bases and suitable edge treatments are all available, with engineer certification where the site requires it.

Do you deliver and install Australia-wide?

Yes. We deliver and install plinths and sculpture across Australia, coordinating freight, crane access and installation with your site team.
