Australian Sculptors

Australia’s Most Notable Sculptors

Australian sculpture has a real public history, not just a gallery one. Bertram Mackennal was the first Australian-born sculptor knighted for his work and remains the only Australian to have work in the Royal Collection. Clement Meadmore’s geometric steel forms are held by MoMA and the Whitney in New York. Bert Flugelman’s stainless steel Spheres in Adelaide’s Rundle Mall and Inge King’s Forward Surge at the Arts Centre Melbourne are among the most-seen public artworks in the country – most people who’ve walked past them don’t know the sculptor’s name, which says something about how embedded sculpture already is in Australian public space.

Sculptors Represented by ARTpark

ARTpark represents more than 40 working Australian sculptors, spanning bronze, stainless and Corten steel, fabricated metal and stone. This isn’t a curated shortlist – it’s the practical roster we draw on when matching an artist to a brief, whether that’s a single garden piece or a public commission. A selection of the sculptors most represented in the collection:

  • Greg Johns – geometric steel and Corten forms, one of the most widely placed sculptors in the ARTpark collection
  • Stephen Glassborow – abstract stainless and painted steel sculpture, also represented by SOHO Galleries in Sydney
  • Lucas Guilbert – contemporary figurative and abstract metal work, also represented by SOHO Galleries
  • Michael Vaynman – large-scale stainless steel sculpture
  • Sonia Payes – sculptural and photographic practice spanning public and gallery work
  • David McCracken – kinetic and engineered steel sculpture
  • Mela Cooke – figurative bronze and metal sculpture, also represented by SOHO Galleries

Several ARTpark sculptors – including Glassborow, Johns, Guilbert and Cooke – are also represented by our sister gallery SOHO Galleries in Sydney, so their work can be seen and sourced through either collection.

Commissioning & Buying

If you’re choosing sculpture for a specific site – a garden, an estate, a public or commercial space – the sculptor is only half the decision; scale, material and placement matter as much as the artist. See our consultation & site-specific selection page for how we help match artist and artwork to a brief, or public art & large-scale commissions for councils, developers and institutions.
